Greece is a southern europe member of the European Union, with its capital in Athens. The country joined the European Communities in 1981 as the southern-Mediterranean enlargement. Economically, Greece is a southern Mediterranean economy dominated by tourism, shipping and agriculture, recovering from the 2010–2018 sovereign-debt crisis. The country has used the euro since 2001, and it is part of the Schengen area for cross-border movement. Greek is the official language and the country is divided into 4 NUTS-1 statistical regions for the purposes of Eurostat reporting. On Eurostat's headline indicators, Greece is currently 12th-most populous of the 27 member states with data on record; 16th by GDP at current prices.
