Netherlands is a western europe member of the European Union, with its capital in Amsterdam. The country joined the European Communities in 1958 as one of the six founding member states. Economically, Netherlands is an open trading economy anchored by the Port of Rotterdam, Schiphol Airport and a strong agri-food complex, with a fiscally conservative tradition and the seat of EU agencies (EMA in Amsterdam, Eurojust in The Hague). The country has used the euro since 1999, and it is part of the Schengen area for cross-border movement. Dutch is the official language and the country is divided into 4 NUTS-1 statistical regions for the purposes of Eurostat reporting.
