Hungary is a central europe member of the European Union, with its capital in Budapest. The country joined the European Communities in 2004 in the largest single enlargement to date — the ten central-and-eastern European, Mediterranean accession. Economically, Hungary is a Central European manufacturing economy with a strong automotive supply chain, retaining the forint outside the euro area. The country retains the HUF, with eurozone entry foreseen once the convergence criteria are met, and it is part of the Schengen area for cross-border movement. Hungarian is the official language and the country is divided into 3 NUTS-1 statistical regions for the purposes of Eurostat reporting. On Eurostat's headline indicators, Hungary is currently 13th-most populous of the 27 member states with data on record; 17th by GDP at current prices.
