Sweden is a northern europe member of the European Union, with its capital in Stockholm. The country joined the European Communities in 1995 in the EFTA-route enlargement (alongside Austria, Finland and Sweden). Economically, Sweden is a Nordic high-tech economy (Ericsson, Spotify, IKEA legacy), with a krona that floats outside the euro area following the 2003 referendum result. The country retains the SEK, with eurozone entry foreseen once the convergence criteria are met, and it is part of the Schengen area for cross-border movement. Swedish is the official language. On Eurostat's headline indicators, Sweden is currently 11th-most populous of the 27 member states with data on record; 9th by GDP at current prices.
