Country at a glance
Latvia is a baltic member of the European Union, with its capital in Riga. The country joined the European Communities in 2004 in the largest single enlargement to date — the ten central-and-eastern European, Mediterranean accession. Economically, Latvia is a Baltic economy with a services orientation, a banking sector recovering from the 2018 ABLV affair, and steady declines in population through emigration. The country has used the euro since 2014, and it is part of the Schengen area for cross-border movement. Latvian is the official language. On Eurostat's headline indicators, Latvia is currently 23rd-most populous of the 27 member states with data on record; 24th by GDP at current prices.
