Immigration / Routes

The routes

Frontex classifies six main migratory routes into the EU. Each follows a distinct geography, draws different origin countries, and rises and falls based on conditions on the ground — conflict, geopolitics, weather, smuggling-network shifts, and enforcement.

§A · Detections by route · 2024 — total 236,963

§B · Per-route trend · 2014–2024

The six lines tell six different stories.

All six routes plotted on the same axis (linear, persons). The Eastern Mediterranean peak of 2015 dominates the chart at 885k detections that single year — by far the largest single-route, single-year figure on record. After 2016 the chart redistributes across multiple smaller channels.

§C · Documented fatalities along the route — IOM Missing Migrants

Counted dead and missing.

IOM Missing Migrants Project tracks documented fatalities and disappearances. The Mediterranean alone accounts for the majority of the total. These figures undercount — many incidents go unrecorded.

Method

Route classifications: Frontex's six standard channels. Yearly figures: transcribed from Frontex annual press releases (URLs in borders.json). Fatality figures: IOM Missing Migrants Project, mapped from IOM's "region of incident" labels into route-aligned buckets. An interactive map with route polylines and IOM heat-overlay is on the roadmap.
