In 2009, Romania's passenger cars, by type of motor energy and size of engine increased by 5.4% compared to 2008, reaching 4,245,000.

Romania ranks 12th out of 26 EU member states with reported data — in the top half of the distribution.

Over the past five years, the indicator has grown by 31.6% (from 3,225,300 in 2004).
