In 1997, Bulgaria's passenger cars, by type of motor energy and size of engine increased by 1.4% compared to 1996, reaching 1,731,000.

Bulgaria ranks 16th out of 25 EU member states with reported data — in the bottom half of the distribution.

Over the past five years, the indicator has grown by 22.7% (from 1,411,000 in 1992).
