In 1996, Bulgaria's passenger cars, by type of motor energy and size of engine increased by 3.6% compared to 1995, reaching 1,707,000.

Bulgaria ranks 16th out of 25 EU member states with reported data — in the bottom half of the distribution.

Over the past five years, the indicator has grown by 25.6% (from 1,359,000 in 1991).
