In 2001, Italy's at-risk-of-poverty rate by poverty threshold, age and sex increased by 5.3% compared to 2000, reaching 20.0%.

Italy ranks 5th out of 19 EU member states with reported data — in the top half of the distribution.

Over the past five years, the indicator has fallen by 4.8% (from 21.0% in 1996).
