In 1976, Portugal's population on 1 january by age group and sex increased by 14.2% compared to 1975, reaching 136,250.

Portugal ranks 12th out of 21 EU member states with reported data — in the bottom half of the distribution.

Over the past five years, the indicator has grown by 7.3% (from 126,983 in 1971).
