In 1983, Portugal's population on 1 january by age group and sex increased by 4.5% compared to 1982, reaching 181,239.

Portugal ranks 12th out of 23 EU member states with reported data — in the bottom half of the distribution.

Over the past five years, the indicator has grown by 30.5% (from 138,900 in 1978).
