In 1998, Estonia's population on 1 january by age group and sex decreased by 4.1% compared to 1997, reaching 37,060.

Estonia ranks 23rd out of 26 EU member states with reported data — in the bottom half of the distribution.

Over the past five years, the indicator has fallen by 9.9% (from 41,129 in 1993).
