Government deficit/surplus, debt and associated data

In 2021, Malta's government deficit/surplus, debt and associated data increased by 1.8% compared to 2020, reaching 49.7%.

The figure is below the EU-27 average of 86.7%.

Malta ranks 18th out of 27 EU member states with reported data — in the bottom half of the distribution.

Over the past five years, the indicator has fallen by 6.4% (from 53.1% in 2016).
