In 1998, Finland's population on 1 january by age group and sex increased by 1.6% compared to 1997, reaching 168,751.

Finland ranks 17th out of 26 EU member states with reported data — in the bottom half of the distribution.

Over the past five years, the indicator has grown by 9.2% (from 154,572 in 1993).
