In 1999, Finland's population on 1 january by age group and sex increased by 1.9% compared to 1998, reaching 171,895.

Finland ranks 16th out of 26 EU member states with reported data — in the bottom half of the distribution.

Over the past five years, the indicator has grown by 9.3% (from 157,232 in 1994).
