In 1981, Ireland's population on 1 january by age group and sex increased by 2.6% compared to 1980, reaching 63,000.

Ireland ranks 18th out of 22 EU member states with reported data — in the bottom half of the distribution.

Over the past five years, the indicator has grown by 5.7% (from 59,600 in 1976).
