In 1999, Malta's population on 1 january by age group and sex increased by 0.8% compared to 1998, reaching 8,481.

Malta ranks 26th out of 26 EU member states with reported data — in the bottom half of the distribution.

Over the past five years, the indicator has grown by 10.6% (from 7,671 in 1994).
