In 1990, Romania's fertility indicators decreased by 17.6% compared to 1989, reaching 1.83.

Romania ranks 11th out of 23 EU member states with reported data — in the top half of the distribution.

Over the past five years, the indicator has fallen by 20.8% (from 2.31 in 1985).
